What is it used for?
VALACYCLOVIR is an antiviral agent. It is used for the treatment of the herpes zoster infection (shingles), genital herpes infection and cold sores. This medicine is not an ultimate cure. It is capable of helping the sores heal faster though. It can also be used to suppress genital herpes infection. This medicine, when used in combination with the safe sex practice, may reduce the risk of spreading herpes infection, but even with the therapy, it is still possible to transmit the infection to your partner.
This medicine may be used for the other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you want to know more about it.
What should I discuss with my physician prior to taking this medicine?
Please do tell your physician if you have any of the following conditions:
- acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)
- any other condition that may weaken the immune system
- bone marrow or kidney transplant
- kidney disease
- an unusual or allergic reaction to valacyclovir, acyclovir, ganciclovir, valganciclovir, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
- pregnant or trying to get pregnant
- breast-feeding
How is this medicine should be taken?
Take it orally accompanied with a glass of water. You can take this medicine with or without food. Your doses should be taken at the regular intervals. You should never take this medicine more often than prescribed. You must finish the full course prescribed by your doctor even if you think that your condition has gotten better. You should never stop taking this medicine prematurely unless your doctor specifically advised you to do so.
Consult with your pediatrician regarding the possibility of use of this medicine by children. Although this drug may be prescribed for children as young as 2 years old for certain conditions, precautions should be applied.
Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, get in touch with the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. You should never share it with the others.
What to do if I missed a dose?
If you missed a dose, it should be taken as soon as possible. If the time has almost come for the next dose, only that one should be taken. You should never take double or extra doses; a single doze is sufficient for the purposes.
What are the possible interactions with the other medicine/food/etc?

This list is not all-inclusive. Provide your health care provider with a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you use. Also tell them whether you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. Some of those items may also interact with your medicine.
Is there anything I should pay attention to while taking it?
Let your doctor or health care professional know if there is no improvement to your symptoms after 1 week.
This medicine works best when taken early in the course of the infection, preferably within the first 72 hours. You should begin the treatment as soon as possible after the first signs of infection like tingling, itching, or pain in the affected area.
It is possible for the genital herpes to be spread even when there are no more visible symptoms present. You should always use safe sex practices like latex or polyurethane condoms whenever you plan to have a sexual contact.
You should stay well hydrated while taking this medicine by drinking plenty of fluids.
Does this medicine have any possible side effects?
The following side effects should be reported to your doctor or health care professional as soon as they are noted:
- allergic reactions like skin rashes, itching or hives,face, lips, or tongue swelling
- aggressive behavior
- confusion
- hallucinations
- problems with balance, talking, walking
- stomach pain
- tremor
- trouble passing urine or change in the amount of urine
The side effects listed below usually do not necessarily require any medical attention (please do report them to your physician if they are recurrent or bothersome):
- dizziness
- headache
- nausea, vomiting

Where should I keep my medicine?
Keep this medicine out of the children’s reach.
This medicine should be stored at the room temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees C (59 and 77 degrees F). Keep container tightly closed. Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
